Miami plays its part better than almost any city in America. The neon, the beach bodies, the velvet ropes are all real, and all a performance. What surprises people is how much city sits behind the show. It divides across the bay. Miami Beach is the sandbar everyone pictures: Art Deco pastels, oceanfront hotels, and a nightlife that runs until morning. The mainland is the real city, and the more interesting one. Wynwood and the Design District trade in galleries and architecture, Little Havana keeps the city’s Cuban soul, and Coconut Grove and Coral Gables stay green, low, and quietly grand. Some of the best food and art in the country is here, once you look past the beach. Come between November and April, when the air turns warm and dry and the humidity lifts. We point clients to the edges, late November or April, when the weather holds but the crowds and rates ease. December through March is peak, glamorous and expensive, opening with Art Basel. Summer runs hot and heavy through hurricane season, best left to those the storms do not worry.
